HPTA Axis
Last updated
Compounds acting on the loop that runs from the hypothalamus to the pituitary to the testes or ovaries: GnRH signalling, release of luteinising hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, and the sex-hormone output those drive. HPTA stands for hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis. HPG, the same loop named without assuming a sex, is the term the scientific literature generally prefers, and it exists on this site as a pathway.
Why it matters here
This axis is a feedback loop, so records here often describe suppression and recovery rather than a simple increase, and the lab values that track it, LH, FSH, testosterone and oestradiol, are the outcomes actually measured.
What it is not
HPTA and HPG name the same axis, but HPTA is the bodybuilding term and carries an implied male, testicular reading that HPG does not. This category is also not about libido: desire and arousal are filed under Sexual Health and correlate only loosely with what the axis is doing.
Also called
- hpta
- hpg axis
- reproductive axis
- gonadal axis
- fertility
HPTA is the community abbreviation and HPG axis the scientific one for the same structure. Fertility resolves here because it is what people search for, not because every member has been studied for it.
