Mechanism of Action
Collagen Synthesis
Last updated
The making of collagen, the main structural protein of skin, tendon, bone and other connective tissue. Cells first produce procollagen, which is then processed and cross-linked outside the cell into mature fibres. A compound filed here is reported to increase one or more steps in that sequence, and which step was measured varies a great deal.
Why it matters here
Almost every cosmetic record rests on this mechanism, and the measurement decides the strength: procollagen messenger RNA in cultured cells is a far weaker claim than a measured change in human skin, and the rung records that difference.
What it is not
Raising procollagen production is not producing visible change in skin. Neither has anything to do with swallowing collagen, which is digested into amino acids, so an oral collagen product and a compound that signals fibroblasts are unrelated mechanisms sharing a word. Collagen support is also an alias on our Skin Quality outcome, so the same phrase resolves to a mechanism and to a result.

Procollagen is the precursor the cell makes before the fibre is assembled, so procollagen upregulation names an earlier and narrower step than collagen synthesis strictly does.
