Reported Outcome

Fat Loss

Last updated

A reported outcome category covering measured reduction in body fat: fat mass on DEXA or bioimpedance, waist circumference, or the fat-derived share of a change in body weight. It is distinct from weight loss, which is a single number on a scale and moves with water, gut contents and lean tissue as well as fat. Records filed here should state what was measured and in whom.

Why it matters here

Trials very often report only total body weight, so a record tagged Fat Loss may rest on a weight endpoint, and the evidence rung together with the stated endpoint is what tells you which one you are reading.

What it is not

Not weight loss: a study showing kilograms lost has not shown fat lost unless body composition was measured, and where lean tissue also falls the two numbers diverge sharply. Fat oxidation is a third thing again, being a rate measured over hours, which does not by itself demonstrate any change in stored fat.

Also called

The alias list mixes outcome words with process words. Lipolysis support and fat oxidation name things measured inside the body, while cut-phase support is gym vocabulary for a training phase rather than any measured endpoint.

Compounds carrying this term

None on file yet. This term is in the controlled vocabulary but no compound record currently uses it — which is a statement about our coverage, not about the term.
