A protein longer than roughly fifty amino acids, made by putting the gene for it into bacteria, yeast or cultured cells and harvesting what they produce. This site assigns the type on size and production method together: long chains that fold into a defined three-dimensional shape and are grown biologically rather than assembled chemically. Growth hormone, erythropoietin and the interferons are the familiar examples.

Why it matters here

The folding is the product and it is fragile, so these are the records where storage temperature, freeze-thaw cycles and shaking matter most; a denatured protein can look identical in the vial and do nothing.

What it is not

Recombinant describes how a molecule was made, not what it is: a short peptide can also be produced recombinantly and is still a peptide. The 50-amino-acid boundary against Peptide is a convention this site fixes for consistency, not a chemical fact, and other references draw it elsewhere.

The alias >50aa is shorthand for the size rule applied here. Recombinant on its own names the production method and exists separately on this site as a molecular origin.
