PEPTIDE CORPUS

Reported Outcome

Endurance

Last updated

A reported outcome category covering sustained physical work: maximal oxygen uptake, time to exhaustion, lactate threshold, and time-trial performance. These endpoints do not always move together, and aerobic capacity can rise with no change in race performance or the reverse. Rodent endurance is usually a treadmill or swim-to-exhaustion time, which is a fatigue measure rather than a performance one.

Why it matters here

Endurance claims for mitochondrial compounds usually rest on cell or rodent measurements of oxygen use rather than on anyone going further, and the rung on the record makes that visible.

What it is not

A mitochondrial marker is not endurance: greater mitochondrial density or higher measured respiration in tissue is an intermediate step, and translating it into human performance is the part that usually fails. Time to exhaustion is also a poor proxy for real performance, being highly variable and easily shifted by motivation.

Also called

Work output and stamina are informal. The measured versions are power sustained over a defined period and time to exhaustion respectively, and those two are not interchangeable with each other.

None on file yet. This term is in the controlled vocabulary but no compound record currently uses it — which is a statement about our coverage, not about the term.
