Mitochondrial Function

How well mitochondria convert fuel and oxygen into ATP, the molecule that powers almost everything a cell does. It spans the electron transport chain and oxidative phosphorylation, the integrity of the inner mitochondrial membrane, the production and handling of reactive oxygen species, and the making and clearing of mitochondria themselves. Records tagged here concern that whole system rather than one enzyme inside it.
Why it matters here
The phrase appears in a great deal of product copy but is measured very differently across studies, from oxygen consumption in cultured cells to exercise capacity in a person, and the rung a claim earns usually depends on which was actually done.
What it is not
Not the same as feeling more energetic: a change in oxygen consumption in cultured cells is an in_vitro finding and licenses nothing about how anyone feels. It is also distinct from Mitochondrial Biogenesis, which is one mechanism acting on this pathway rather than the pathway itself.
