Reported Outcome

Recovery

Last updated

A reported outcome category covering the return of function after a stressor: exercise, injury, surgery or illness. It is measured indirectly, through soreness scales, force output regained over hours or days, muscle damage markers such as creatine kinase, or repeat work capacity. Because it has no single agreed endpoint, a record here is only readable if it names the measure used.

Why it matters here

This is one of the vaguest outcomes on the site, so the endpoint matters more than the verdict: a change in a soreness questionnaire and a change in regained force are different findings and earn different rungs.

What it is not

Recovery is not Tissue Repair: repair is a structural process seen in tissue, while recovery is a return of function, and function can return while tissue is still healing or lag long after it has healed. Subjective soreness scores also correlate poorly with measured muscle damage.

Also called

Work capacity and nerve recovery are narrower than the rest of the list, one being a performance measure and the other neurological. They sit under this heading so searches land, not because they are equivalent.
