Reported Outcome

Longevity

Last updated

A reported outcome category covering measures of ageing and lifespan: median or maximum survival in an animal cohort, mortality rate in human cohorts, and ageing biomarkers such as epigenetic clocks, telomere length or senescent cell burden. Almost all direct lifespan evidence comes from short-lived species. Human entries in this category are biomarker entries, not survival entries.

Why it matters here

A biomarker moving and a life being longer are separated by decades of unfinished research, so the rung and the named endpoint together are the only honest reading of a longevity record.

What it is not

Epigenetic age is not age and telomere length is not lifespan: these clocks are statistical models trained to predict age, and shifting a prediction does not demonstrate a change in what it predicts. Longer telomeres also carry their own associations, including with cancer risk.

Also called

Geroprotection is the research term for slowing ageing processes. Senescence clearance names a mechanism rather than an outcome, and healthspan is a further step removed with no agreed measurement at all.

Compounds carrying this term

None on file yet. This term is in the controlled vocabulary but no compound record currently uses it — which is a statement about our coverage, not about the term.
