Mitochondrial Biogenesis

The making of new mitochondria inside a cell, together with the signalling that triggers it. The best-described control point is PGC-1alpha, a co-activator that switches on the genes for mitochondrial components. A compound filed here is reported to raise those signals. Counting actual new mitochondria requires different assays from measuring the signal, and most studies do only the second.

Why it matters here

Mitochondrial support is one of the vaguest phrases in this field. This term exists so a record can state which part is actually claimed: the signal, the organelle count, or the function.

What it is not

The alias mitochondrial function resolves here, to our Mitochondrial category, and to the Mitochondrial Function pathway, and these are three different things. More mitochondria is not better-working mitochondria, and a rise in PGC-1alpha messenger RNA is some distance from either.

Also called

PGC-1alpha is the usual shorthand for the master regulator of this process. Mitobiogenesis is a contraction of the same term and carries no separate meaning.
