Mitochondrial Cardiolipin Binding

Binding cardiolipin, a phospholipid found almost exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it holds the respiratory chain complexes in working arrangement. Cardiolipin is vulnerable to oxidative damage. A compound that binds it is described as stabilising the membrane and preserving that arrangement. This is a structural mechanism rather than a receptor one, since nothing is being switched on.
Why it matters here
It is unusually specific for this field: a named lipid, a named location, and a binding claim that can be tested directly. That is quite different footing from the broad mitochondrial support language elsewhere on the site.
What it is not
Binding cardiolipin is not making more mitochondria, which is Mitochondrial Biogenesis and has a different readout entirely. It is also not an antioxidant claim in the usual sense: the described action is holding a membrane in shape rather than scavenging free radicals, although the two are frequently reported side by side.

Cardiolipin is named for the tissue it was first isolated from, the heart. The name says nothing about a cardiovascular action, and the lipid is present in mitochondria throughout the body.
