A reported outcome category covering sleep measured either objectively or by report. Objective endpoints come from polysomnography or actigraphy: time taken to fall asleep, minutes awake after sleep onset, and time spent in each sleep stage. Subjective endpoints come from questionnaires and diaries, and the two correlate only loosely.

Why it matters here

Deep sleep claims are common in this field and usually trace to slow-wave sleep measured on EEG in small laboratory studies, so whether a record rests on EEG or on a wearable's estimate changes what it can support.

What it is not

Consumer wearables do not measure sleep stages directly: they infer them from movement and heart rate, and their stage estimates disagree substantially with polysomnography, so a wearable-based deep sleep increase is a weaker and different claim. More deep sleep is also not automatically better sleep.

Also called

Sleep architecture is the technical term for how sleep stages are arranged across a night. Deep sleep is the everyday name for slow-wave sleep, which is one component of that architecture rather than a synonym for good sleep.
