Thymic Immune Modulation

Action on the thymus, or on the T-cell maturation the thymus governs. The thymus trains T cells early in life and shrinks steadily with age. Compounds filed here are peptides derived from or modelled on thymic extracts, reported to affect T-cell counts, maturation or responsiveness.

Why it matters here

This holds some of the oldest peptide literature on the site, much of it decades old and to standards that would not pass review today. The rung is doing real work here rather than decorating an already strong record.

What it is not

Immune modulation is not immune stimulation, and neither is a claim that a compound fights an infection: that is Antimicrobial Activity, which acts on the pathogen rather than the host. The thymosin alpha and thymosin beta peptides also share a name and a tissue of origin but not a mechanism; the beta family is filed under Actin Regulation.

Also called

Thymic factor and thymic peptide are historical umbrella terms for glandular extracts and their fractions rather than names of a single molecule. The bare alias thymic also resolves to our Immune Modulators category, so check whether a field holds a mechanism or a shelf.
