GABAergic Modulation

Changing signalling through GABA, the brain's main inhibitory neurotransmitter, which broadly damps neuronal firing. Compounds filed here are reported to affect GABA levels, its receptors, or the balance between inhibitory and excitatory signalling. As with dopamine, the precise step is often inferred backwards from an observed behavioural effect rather than measured directly.

Why it matters here

This is where calming and anxiety-related records point, so it is worth checking whether a record rests on a measured receptor action or on an animal behaviour test with a mechanism attached afterwards.

What it is not

GABAergic describes a system, not a sedative effect, and a compound labelled this way is not necessarily benzodiazepine-like. The alias anxiolytic signalling is outcome language sitting in a mechanism field, and that mismatch is itself worth noticing.

Also called

GABA is gamma-aminobutyric acid. It is the neurotransmitter, not a compound class, and a product containing GABA is not the same as a compound acting on GABA signalling.
